アンネフランクの父、オットーフランク氏が、ナチの強制収容所から、ロシア軍によって、開放されたということを知り、歴史の矛盾の不思議さというようなことを感じましたが、Emma Lazarus(1849-1887)の”The New Colossus”は、ロシア国内における、ポグロムと呼ばれた、ユダヤ人大量虐殺を逃れ、アメリカに移民してきた、ロシア系ユダヤ人を助けた経験を元に、詠われたものです。
今でこそ、イスラエルという国をもつ国民となりましたが、第二次世界大戦中までは、“祖国を持たない流浪の民”として、迫害をくぐりぬけてきたユダヤ民族のことを思うと、こちらの詩が詠まれた当時の、熱い思いが、伝わってくるようです。
“The New Colossus”
Not like the brazen giant of Greek Fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightening, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your stories pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
